Devlog #04 | Week 38

Heyyo, Sondre here! It's my turn again!

Last week we worked on our second pitch, concept art, and some music.

For our second pitch we came up with a survival sidescroller with horror elements. We decided to call it "Comfort Zone". The game is about a rabbit who wakes up one day to find out that their colony is gone. Their home is surrounded by a small mysterious barrier and your goal is to venture out of the barrier in order to gather resources to survive and to expand the barrier.

The name "Comfort Zone" comes from how people in real life have their own comfort zone, and when they force themselves to go outside of said comfort zone they expand it further.

The game is about expanding the zone as much as possible by gathering resources from the outside of the zone, therefore pushing the player to go out further. There will be different meters for different situations, including a threat meter for an enemy who hunts you down. There will be a stealth mechanic where you can hide from the enemy for a specific amount of time and when the timer runs out the enemy will know where you are.

Making the pitch was fun and interesting, as I got a lot of ideas on what to make. It was cool to see how the pitch turned out in the end, but it took a lot out of me, as I'm not used to having so many ideas in my head at the same time.

The pitch presentation went really well! We presented the pitch to our publisher/teacher, our vice-Principal, and another game developer teacher. After the presentation they gave us feedback on what we did good and what we could've done better. They really liked our reason for choosing the name "Comfort Zone" and how the gameplay reflects that you need to step out of your comfort zone in order to expand it further. We were told that we should've focused more on the gameplay but since we're all more creative and artistic we didn't really know how to flesh out the gameplay and develop it. All in all the presentation went really well and was much better than our first pitch!
