Devlog #03 | Week 37
Heyo! My name is Felix, also known as NebulaAurora! Today I will be the one to write our devlog and I will be introducing myself as well!
During this week we've been focusing on pitching a game idea to our teacher, and I will be writing about our painful process and how we got through it in the end.
Before I get into what we've been doing this week, let me introduce myself better! So... hi! My name is Felix. Most people online know me as "NebulaAurora". There is no deep meaning behind that name, I just think space stuff is cool haha.
I'd say my main job on the team is being the lead audio/music producer. Music in video games has always meant a lot to me on a personal level and I think audio design is one of the most important things you need in a game to tell a good immersive story.
During my free time I usually like to stream on Twitch or make videos for my YouTube channel. I have always loved sharing my gaming experiences ever since I was a child, and the internet has been an amazing way for me to share my experiences with others.
One of my favorite games of all time is Minecraft. It's the game that introduced me to the online world and YouTube in general. I grew up watching channels like "The Yogscast" and their way of telling stories through this beautiful block game really inspired me to create my own worlds and stories. This is also one of the reasons I wanted to get into game design, as I want to tell stories and create my own worlds that I can share with others.
But that's enough about me. Though if you want to get to know me better you can check out my socials here: https://linktr.ee/NebulaAurora
Now let's get into what we've been doing this week!
After a week of concepting and designing, our amazing artist Jenny finally finished our company's logo! A lot of thought went into this design and I'd say we are very happy with the outcome!
Now that our studio's logo was complete, it was finally time to actually start thinking about what we wanted to make together.
On Monday our teacher gave us a task to make a pitch for a video game, and gave us 3 days to make a presentation that we would show him on Thursday. The start of the pitching process was a bit stressful for all of us. Some of us felt the stress a lot more than others but in the end we managed to collect ourselves and began brainstorming ideas for our game. Our teacher gave us a couple of rules for our first pitch that we needed to follow. The first rule was that it couldn't have horror elements and the second rule was that it couldn't have realistic gore or violence.
During our brainstorming we wrote down a bunch of different game genres that we could think of. We slowly removed the ones we didn't have much interest in until we landed on 3 specific genres that we felt could be fun to combine. We decided to go for a rhythm-based RPG with Visual Novel elements sprinkled into it.
We quickly came up with the idea to make it take place in a fantasy world setting with anthropomorphic animal characters. Jenny came up with the genius idea of making the main character a bard since the game would be rhythm-based and take place in a medieval fantasy world, so we thought this would be very fitting!
After writing down the general idea of what we wanted the game to be we began brainstorming gameplay, story, and world ideas. This part turned out a lot harder than what we anticipated.
After a good night's sleep and getting our heads cleared we went back to the drawing board, trying to figure out gameplay and general story. Later during the day Jenny and Sondre started working on the PowerPoint presentation while I went to study more music making.
Thursday quickly arrived and we did our last push to get the presentation done. It was stressful but we managed to get it done in time. Now we just had to actually present our idea to our teacher which was frightening but also a bit exciting. We presented our game idea and it went a lot better than what we initially thought! Obviously there were some things we could improve on but all in all it was an alright pitch haha.
The next day our teacher let us go for a walk to through the city and buy donuts which was really nice of him! It was a nice way for us to clear our heads a bit more and freshen up before we started on our next game idea. Now that we were done with our first pitch it was time to start on the second one... but you will hear more about that in next week's dev log!
Thank you for reading this week's dev log! Now you've met the entire team! This week has definitely been very stressful for all of us but in the end we managed to pull through. Remember to check out our other socials which you can find here: https://linktr.ee/sidetracksb
